THE PRACTICE OF LEADERSHIP PROGRAM:
Guarantee future effectiveness |

About the Program
The Practice of Leadership Program (PLP) has been developed in response to requests from members for a high-powered, business-focused program that will appeal to operational managers who have the drive that will take them into senior roles in the near future.
The successful approach of Consortium programs for senior organisational leaders has now been translated into a purpose-designed, business-oriented, peer-learning experience for managers with formal day-to-day accountabilities.
Target Group
The Practice of Leadership Program is specifically designed to build the leadership skills of early-to-mid career, high-potential managers who are one or two years away from a more senior role.
Program participants may have a range of experience and backgrounds that could include project leadership, team leader roles or lower-to-mid level management in an operational or customer facing environment. Also, the program will be ideal for those high-skilled individuals who are currently in functional roles such as legal, financial, engineering or administration.
Importantly, all participants will have demonstrated clear leadership capability and be keen to advance into more senior positions.

What participants say about
the PLP
“Action focused exploration of the way I lead, behave and manage in my organisation. Great!” |
“The team and the people I met – their generosity and genuineness – were outstanding.” |
“Clever integration of tools and tactics. Challenged my perception of how I lead. I only thought I was doing the right thing. Now I know what I should be doing better.” |
| |
“Caused me to reflect on my world, who I am and where I am heading.” |
Program
The Practice of Leadership Program is a challenging, action-focused program in which participants learn both by doing and by exploring their own reactions to complex leadership situations. It will:
deepen individuals’ self-awareness about how they themselves are currently travelling in their job and career. They will understand more about how to deal with change and handle their relationships with insight and skill; |
‘reality–check’ their understanding of the skill set demanded from successful business leaders. This will include identifying critical capabilities, important gaps and planning for targeted skill development; |
further develop participants’ ‘big picture’ strategic skills. The program deals with what is involved in moving from an operational focus to a broader and more strategic perspective, including areas such as the evolving business and social environment, values and ethics, sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); |
explore future development options, including awareness of the capabilities required at higher levels; career makers and breakers; and the most important skills necessary to take on higher level leadership roles. |
Program activities
The Practice of Leadership Program uses a proven range of styles and strategies to build insights in participants about their personal approach and professional capabilities.
A strong base of theory and practice on leadership underpins the design, which is characterised by:
exploring the interconnected stories of participants’ personal and professional journey, as these have unfolded to date, and how they can be directed into the future; |
linking action and reflection: assisting participants understand, and act to achieve, their potential for the future; |
multiple perspectives on leadership: coach, team builder, boundary rider, manager of diversity, ethical touchstone; |
systems thinking: social capital, stakeholder engagement, values, governance, visionary thinking, strategic action and change management are integrated into a robust and actionable ‘map' of future personal development. |
The program achieves these powerful outcomes through a blend of experiential design, state-of-the-art diagnostics, group work, peer presentations, profiling sessions and discussions.
Aims and benefits
The aim of the Practice of Leadership Program is to help our member organisations build a strong cohort of potential leaders within their ranks of operational managers. It is designed to take managers who have been identified as possessing leadership skills and aptitude to a higher level of proficiency: one from which they will be ready to step forward and take up higher, more strategically-focused accountabilities.
The Practice of Leadership Program delivers extensive benefits to both the individual and the organisation.
For the individual:
a greater knowledge of current best practice in what constitutes effective leadership in a business context; |
increased skill as a practitioner able to handle the complexity and subtlety that exists in senior leadership situations driving whole-of-business outcomes; |
deep personal knowledge of their own personal and professional approach to leadership, together with opportunities and strategies for improvement. |
For the organisation:
skilled practitioners able to move from the middle levels of operational management to executive leadership positions; |
increased understanding of the organisation's current skills pool and what needs to be done to broaden or improve it; |
the ability to develop an enhanced strategic approach to building the human capital of the organisation. |
