About the Program
The Internal Consulting Program (ICP) is a new Consortium program that has been designed in response to requests from our members. It is specifically designed to assist internal specialists contribute more to the success of their organisations.
Technical specialists – professionals with a background in engineering, IT&T, Law, Accounting and other expert areas – are a critical part in the process of turning organisational ambitions into practice.
Internal consultants act as both content specialists and project managers to their organisations. They are charged with delivering projects to specification, on budget and on time.
They face the challenges of being constantly responsive to changes in project scope and timing; of managing upwards and laterally as organisational dynamics shift; of working effectively with stakeholders inside and outside the broader organisation.
They are the conduit between organisational intent and the achievement of successful outcomes.
The ICP uses an intensive experiential style well suited to technical specialists. It provides a challenging and affirming approach that will develop both personal skills and organisational capability..
Target Group
The Internal Consulting Program is aimed at middle level specialists who are responsible for delivering significant projects to specification and on time.
They will be in positions where their work has both a tactical and operational impact on organisational performance.
They will be people used to achieving results in complex and dynamic situations.
Their role will regularly involve a need to influence others, negotiate outcomes, manage complex expectations and achieve the buy-in of multiple stakeholders.

What makes the ICP different?
The ICP is an ideal middle level program for content specialists. It takes the view that high level personal skills, such as listening, negotiating, influencing and managing expectations, are an essential complement to the professional skill set technical specialists routinely deploy.
The technical specialist never stops learning, exploring new areas of information and new ideas. The more capable they become in their chosen area, the more they will be required to demonstrate a strong repertoire of personal and interpersonal skills.
The Internal Consulting Program provides participants with the opportunity to:
explore how they operate – understand in greater depth the impact of their behaviour on colleagues, team members and stakeholders. A sharp understanding of leadership style and the way this affects others is developed through structured activities backed by proven frameworks; |
build portfolio skills – the program re-visits and builds on the specific skills areas of listening, influencing others, managing stakeholders and generating the buy-in of others; |
move from professional specialist to becoming effective advisor – participants can re-orientate their role and contribution to the success of individual projects. As well, they will learn to manage the impact of their work on organisational outcomes and business choices; |
develop career options – by building a powerful set of interpersonal skills to match professional capabilities, program participants can explore future development pathways that have greater responsibility and influence. |
Program benefits
The ICP presents a unique opportunity for middle level technical specialists to build their personal and professional effectiveness.
For the organisation, the ICP will deliver improved outcomes through:
better project performance: lower costs; |
reduced over-runs and hold-ups; |
enhanced planning and preparation; |
smoother internal and external consultation; |
better integration of effort. |
For the individual participant, the ICP will deliver the opportunity to have a greater positive influence on the way your organisation operates.
